Competency Hearing Sought in Elizabeth Smart Case

Federal prosecutors on Thursday sought a competency hearing — not forced medication — for the man charged in the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart after receiving split opinions from a pair of psychiatric experts about his competency. The hearing, which will be held sometime this fall, comes after two independent evaluations to determine whether Brian David Mitchell is able to participate in his own defense.

Mitchell, an 55-year-old itinerant street preacher, was indicted in March 2008 on charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor.

The findings by New York forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner and an earlier report from Dr. Richart De Mier at a federal facility in Springfield, Mo., have not been made public.

Had both physicians found Mitchell incompetent, federal prosecutors would have asked for a "Sell" hearing, which would determine whether he could be forcibly medicated in an effort to make him competent. Mitchell's public defender, Robert Steele, said Thursday that he planned to call De Mier as a witness. Steele maintains that Mitchell is incompetent, a conclusion reached twice in a state court case.

Prosecutors sought the evaluation of Mitchell by Welner after Mitchell was observed by De Mier at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners between December 2008 and February 2009. Mitchell suffers from a rare delusional disorder. He has frequently disrupted court proceedings by singing hymns and once yelled at a judge to "repent."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Lambert said a competency hearing could last up to 10 days. A hearing date was expected to be set during an Aug. 17 status conference. Smart was 14 when she was taken from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002. She was found in March 2003, walking the streets of a Salt Lake City suburb with Mitchell and his now-estranged wife, Wanda Eileen Barzee. State court cases for Mitchell and Barzee have stalled because both were found incompetent for trial. Hong Kong police lodged forgery charges on Thursday against a feng shui master who tried to inherit the multibillion-dollar fortune of late developer Nina Wang, news reports said. No plea was taken from Tony Chan chun-chuen when he appeared in a Hong Kong court and he was freed after his brother posted a bond of 20 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.6 million), local broadcaster RTHK said. The case was adjourned until July 8.

Chan was arrested in February last year after a court ruled that a will purportedly leaving Wang's estate to him was a forgery. He was later released on bail. The High Court ruling declared as valid a will from 2002 that left Wang's estate to a charity that she and her late husband founded in 1988. Earlier this year, a court rejected Chan's appeal, saying he pursued "a thoroughly dishonest case" in trying to claim the estate with a forged will.

Wang, once Asia's richest woman, died of cancer in 2007 at age 69. Her fortune held through her private Chinachem Group has been estimated at around $100 billion Hong Kong dollars ($12.8 billion). Chan said during the trial last year that he and Wang were in love, sharing a passion for cooking, travel, model helicopters and feng shui — the Chinese art of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

MBC Plus Sport anchorwoman Song Ji-sun committed suicide by jumping from the 19th floor of her apartment yesterday, reported Edaily SPN. Reports say: "Song Ji-sun attempted suicide at 1.44pm KST by jumping from out of her 19th floor Seocho-dong officetel. Authorities were immediately called and Miss Song was rushed to the emergency room." Seocho police have confirmed that she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speculations are that the suicide is linked to the recent scandal with baseball player, Im Tae-hoon. Song had announced that she had been dating the Doosan Bear player for the past year and a half but the statement was denied by Im Tae-hoon himself. On 7 May 2011, she wrote: "If you cannot take me to you, please give me strength to say the least. My heart is in such pain, I am already on my third sleeping pill."

Her last post on 21 May 2011 read: "I am steering clear of the Internet lately. My words... I am so sorry. I'm not that good with computers so I don't know how to delete my account. I'd first like to tweet my apology. I'm so sorry but really, my Cyworld isn't the truth. I'll reveal the truth soon."

A controversial Singapore-based blogger who sparked heated debate about her dating habits has been arrested and referred to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). According to The New Paper, 23-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident (PR) Jiang Lai was arrested after trying to check in to Fairmont Hotel along Bras Basah Road on 13 May.

She reportedly got into an argument with hotel staff after she was asked to make a deposit for a week's stay. During the argument, Jiang threatened to commit suicide and began to speak incoherently.

Jiang was subsequently arrested by police and referred to IMH. It's not clear why she had planned to stay at the hotel for a week when she lives with her parents in Ang Mo Kio.

Currently a Singapore PR, Jiang came to Singapore when she was six and has lived in Singapore since. She studied at CHIJ St. Nicholas Secondary School and Anglo-Chinese Junior College. Just last month, Jiang Lai shot to online fame after writing on her blog that only Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) schoolboys are worth dating.

In subsequent media interviews, she claimed to be studying at Reed College, a liberal arts college in the US and was on an extended 1 and 1/2 year school break. However, a check with Reed showed that Jiang is currently not enrolled with the school and last studied there in the first half of 2010.

Since her arrest, her Facebook page and blog have not seen any activity.

According to the same paper, the hotel incident is not Jiang's first police case. Jiang was also reported to the police when she threatened to pour concentrated hydrochloric acid on a woman's face in a blog post of 7 May. She later retracted that comment and posted an apology on her blog.

The woman who lodged the report is the wife of a man Jiang used to be involved with. The police classified this case as attempted extortion. Investigations are still ongoing.

Before these incidents, Jiang wrote a blog entry titled "Boys Schools" which rated how boys from different secondary schools would fare as boyfriend material. Jiang Lai, 23, the local blogger who shot to internet fame after she commented that only ACS(I) boys are worth dating, is now in trouble with the police. On May 13, she threatened to kill herself at a hotel and was arrested. According to a report in The New Paper today (May 24), the blogger had tried to check in at the Fairmont Singapore for a week's stay on May 13. However, when she was asked to place a deposit, she created a ruckus at the hotel and even threatened to commit suicide at one point. Later, she also started mumbling incoherently.

Police said they received a call at 9.05pm on May 13, requesting assistance at a hotel located at Bras Basah Road. A 23-year-old woman was subsequently arrested and later referred to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Miss Jiang also had a police report lodged against her earlier, after she allegedly threatened on her blog to pour acid on a woman's face on May 7. A police spokesperson has confirmed this, and the case has been classified as attempted extortion, with investigations still ongoing.

Psychiatrists believe that Miss Jiang's vindictive and angry blog entries were a cry for attention and help, and that she could also be suffering from borderline personality disorder. She may need some professional help, they advised.

"People with borderline personality disorder often feel insecure, inadequate and behave impulsively and irrationally at times," said Dr Ang Yong Guan, a consultant psychiatrist at Paragon Medical.

Miss Jiang claimed that she studied at Reed College, a liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon, USA, but checks have revealed that she last attended classes there from January to May 2010 and is currently not enrolled as a student. She also said she had consulted a lawyer who agreed to waive his legal fees to represent her against some people she wanted to sue for defamation, but the lawyer had yet to agree to take on her case and had made no mention of waiving his fees at the time of her blog posting. The lawyer did not take up her case in the end, checks revealed.

これまでは、警報がくるとどうしようとオドオドして、ウロウロしていたのに、いまだは、また？と思って、警戒する気持ちもなく、コタツに座ったままでいることが多くなってきた。これじゃいけない。やはり、警報だから、いざというときのために備えなくちゃ。

震災後のテレビのCMは、一切にACジャパンのCMにかわってしまったが、その中でも仁科親子のCMへ苦情が多くいったそうだ。このACジャパンのCMは、通常民放でCMを流している際に隙間みたいなときに、このCMを流すらしく、２０種類ぐらいある中から何を流すのかは、テレビ局の判断らしい。

たしかに、あまりにも同じCMを流すから、セリフとか覚えたり、もっとすごいのは、アニメのCMで、”おはようウナギ”とか流れる曲を覚えて、唄ったりできるようになった。まあ、しつこいと思ったりするけれど、こればかりは仕方ない。

同じものを３回ぐらい繰り返しながれたときは、変えたらって気になったが。徐々に、普通のCMが流れるようになってきたことは、少しずつ、起きたことから立ち直りつつあることの証明かもしれない。少しでも前向きにやっていかないと、日本の復興はない。とどまってばかりいられないので、徐々に前に進んでいこう。

話は戻るが、その仁科親子のCMを見るたびに、奥さんに”乳がん・子宮頚がんの検診をうけたら？”と聞いているが、決して不快なCMではないし、苦情につながる理由がわからないが、人それぞれなので、仕方ないかもしれない。

私は、このCMを見るたびに、仁科亜季子の若い頃と、娘の仁美がそっくりであることに感激する。仁科亜季子の若い頃を知っている人はあまりいないのかもしれないが、この娘は、本当に似ている。親子だから当然か。でも、このCMをみては、感動している。私ももしかすると親の若い頃の写真をみたら、もしかしたらそっくりなのかもしれないが。

さて、震災でまだまだ大変なことばかりで、そればかり思っていると胸が痛くなる。少しずつでも前をみて、進んでいきたい。さあ、頑張っていこう。--- ソース

Tristane Banon was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Île-de-France on 13 June 1979.Banon earned a diploma from the Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme de Paris in 2000, and initially worked in casual jobs as a journalist, as an anchorwoman on a television show about new information and communication technologies, and as a sport journalist. She was employed in the politics department, and later the cultural department, of the French weekly Paris-Match, then worked at the daily newspaper Le Figaro.

She published her first book, a long essay entitled Erreurs avouées…(au masculin) in November 2002 (Anne Carrière Ed.). Former U-Kiss member Kim Kibum updated fans on his Twitter on May 12th and said, ” “Kwahahaha Singapore Fan Gathering May 21, Saturday Meet&Greet Session: 2.30pm at IMM Garden Plaza.”

In February, Kim Kibum’s contract with NH Media was terminated. An official from HnB Company confirmed Kim Kibum’s fan meeting in Singapore on May 21st and said, “Kim will be visiting Singapore next week regarding business deals for his doll Piro Piro and while he is there he plans to meet his fans. We are still in talks on the final schedule.”

French-Spanish actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey plays Syrena, a mermaid who forms a bond with a missionary named Philip (Sam Claflin) in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Bhutan’s King getting married with Jetsun Pema later this year.

Bhutanese king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced his engagement to a commoner, sending his loving subjects to country’s parliament that he would be getting married ‘later this year’.

Prince Charming Wangchuck smiled as he named his bride, a 21-year-old student at London’s Regents College, throughout his speech opening parliament.

Wangchuck said that “Her name is Jetsun Pema. While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character. I have decided that the wedding shall be later this year.” In the parliament hall, Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley and the members of parliament articulated their happiness on the announcement of the royal wedding and highlighted the key role of the Throne in Bhutanese nationhood.
