November 2011: A Month for Caring

November 2011 is a month dedicated to caring, and as healthcare professionals we will have plenty of opportunities to promote awareness about important issues in our local communities and beyond. How will you get involved?

National Hospice and Palliative Care Month
Every year millions of Americans face life-limiting illnesses. Founded in 1978, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization is committed to improving end-of-life care and enhancing the quality of life for those individuals and their loved ones through events like National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.

This November the theme is “We Listen, We Care” in honor of the thousands of dedicated hospice and palliative care providers who devote their lives to reaching out to their communities; educating other healthcare professionals; and communicating with elected officials about the importance of quality end-of-life care. For more information and to find out how you can get involved, the NHPCO’s Caring Connections offers free information and resources at http://www.caringinfo.org/.

National Family Caregivers Month
In 1997 President Clinton signed the first presidential proclamation appreciating family caregivers and the vital role they play in providing needed care and support to their loved ones. Since then, what began in 1994 as National Family Caregivers Week by the National Family Caregivers Association has become an entire month dedicated to the more than 65 million family caregivers in America.

Each November the NFCA coordinates National Family Caregivers Month as a time to “thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers” and increase awareness about the important role they play in caring for their loved ones. To learn more, visit: http://www.nfcacares.org/.

American Diabetes Month
November is also American Diabetes Month—a time set aside by the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness about the seriousness of the disease and the importance of diabetes prevention and control. According to the ADA, this month’s them is “I Raise My Hand to Stop Diabetes” in honor of the people, places and programs that are working hard to change the future of diabetes.

To get involved and learn about the Stop Diabetes movement, visit their website or pledge your support on the ADA’s facebook page.
