Flanders offers historic sites and posh accommodations with a unique accent.
Flanders is dotted by cities that feature significant cultural attractions.
Many travelers begin with Bruges (also known as Brugge). Tucked inside a double encirclement of canals, old Hanseatic Bruges - chartered by decree in 1128 - was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site 12 years ago.
The town hall ranks as one of Belgium's oldest, dating from 1376. The 13th century Church of Our Lady, a Scheldt-gothic edifice, belongs on any sightseeing itinerary because of Michelangelo's "Madonna and Child" sculpted in 1504. It's the only sculpture by the Italian master outside of Italy.
Noteable events - Lifting wintertime spirits, Ghent's annual Light Festival illuminates city-center buildings and shimmering canals (Jan 27-31, 2012). Also here, since 1843, jazz groups, street artists, and kid-friendly puppeteers delight spectators during each July's hugely popular 12-day Summer Festival. The city hosts a yearly, coloful Begonia Festival throughout the last weekend of August.
