Share the Gift of Good Health this Season!

The sniffling. The sneezing. The coughing and wheezing. It’s definitely that time of year again. But as healthcare workers we’re in a unique position to spread the word about cold and flu prevention, which in the long run can help us—and those in our care—enjoy a healthier, happier holiday season.

Be sure to pass along these smart tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and share the gift of good health!

Wash Hands Frequently. Wash for at least 15-20 seconds with soap, and use a hand sanitizer between washing. Avoid touching your face, eyes, or rubbing your nose throughout the day.
Clean Shared Items with Alcohol/Sanitizer Wipes. These include phones, keyboards, elevator buttons, and door handles.
Keep Your Distance. Whenever possible, avoid close contact with anyone who has a cold or the flu. Masks and gloves may be worn for extra protection.
Practice Smart Sneezing and Coughing. Sneeze and cough into a tissue; throw the tissue away and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow rather than your hand.
Hydrate! Drink plenty of fluids, but do not share drinking cups or straws.
Breathe Deeply. Get plenty of fresh air.
Stay Active. Exercise regularly and frequently.
Watch Your Plate. Eat healthy foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.
Just Say No. Don’t smoke, and decrease alcohol consumption.
Relax. Studies show stress can decrease immunity.

Some things to keep handy in the workplace include: water, tissues, eye drops, hand sanitizer, cough drops/lozenges, and vitamins.
