Isleworth, Middlesex, Percy House Auxiliary Hospital, before and during the Great War. Percy House was a school that stood where part of the present West Middlesex Hospital now stands. From the Wikipedia article on Isleworth - 'Percy House Military Hospital - Within the old union workhouse complex stood a school, facing Twickenham Road, called Percy House - Percy being the surname of the Duke of Northumberland. Owing to its gradual disuse as a school it was adapted to function as a military hospital during World War I of 1914-18. From 1915 onwards it treated some 5,000 war-wounded soldiers, and then ceased operation some time after the war's end. The building was demolished in 1978'.
The first postcard, by Young & Co of Teddington, shows it as it originally was, a school in about 1911. When it became a military hospital during the war Young simply removed his previous caption from the glass negative and replaced it with its new title as in the second postcard. The Google Street View, though unimpressive, shows approximately the same view today.
The third postcard shows a patient (or possibly medical orderly) of the hospital, Edgar Bleasdale, originally a cotton weaver from Padiham in Lancashire. The postcard is marked on the front 'To Lilian' and is dated January 5th, 1917. Edgar married a Lilian Stanworth in 1924, likely to be the same woman. Next we see a group of nurses from the hospital. These two postcards were by Isleworth photographer Stanley Nixon. Finally, an interior shot of one the the wards. The patients look pretty cheerful, but their wounds are horrific.

Teddington, Middlesex, The Causeway and Broad Street c1907-12
Teddington, Middlesex, The Causeway and Broad Street c1907-12. All four of these postcards were published by Young & Co of Teddington and show Broad Street, one of the main thoroughfares in Teddington and somewhere Mr Young would have been very familiar with. The Causeway looks surprisingly similar today, but the ugly Tesco building in Broad Street is not a patch on the Wintour Phelps shop in the old postcards. Phelps were well known furniture dealers in the area and only closed their last shop in St. Margarets a few years ago. Click the pictures to enlarge. Guildford, Surrey, St Nicolas' Church c1910
Guildford, Surrey, St Nicolas' Church circa 1910. St Nicolas is at the lower end of the High Street. This church was built in 1876 on the site of an earlier building. I think the WHA postcard below called 'Lady's Chapel' may actually be 'Loseley Chapel'. Postcards by Young & Co of Teddington and WHA, click to enlarge.

High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Frogmore Fountain c1912
High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Frogmore Fountain circa 1912. This fountain was apparently scrapped to provide metal for the war effort in the 1940s. It's a shame because it was quite magnificent. The square looks very ordinary without it. This postcard was published by W. H Applebee.

South-West London, Merton Park, Kingston Road Level Crossing circa 1908. The signal box has gone now, giving us an uninterrupted view of the White Hart pub. The railway line shown on the postcard is now used by Tramlink. Tramlink runs on a mixture of street track shared with other traffic, dedicated track in public roads, off-street track and former railway lines. Postcard published by Young & Co of Teddington. Norton St. Philip, Somerset, The George Inn c1910
Norton St Philip, Somerset, The George Inn circa 1910. Situated in Norton St. Philip near Bath, The George Inn is one of the oldest in the country. A grade one listed building, it hasn't changed much in the last hundred years. The little window above the sign has gone though. The landlord at the time of the postcard was Thomas Edgar Dando, born 1877. I think the two men in the doorway are carrying fishing rods. The publisher of this postcard, Young & Co of Teddington has wrongly called it Ye Olde George. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

Taplow Village, Buckinghamshire c1911
Taplow Village, Buckinghamshire circa 1911. Taplow is a village between Burnham and Maidenhead. Down the road we can see the marvellously named Oak and Saw pub, thankfully still there. One of those rare postcards where the modern view is just as pretty as it was a hundred years ago. The publisher is a little difficult to determine, the caption on the right saying 'Taplow Village' is classic Young & Co, but on the left there is faded text saying 'WHA 965', so this is likely a Young and Co republished by WHA.

The two postcards below show a view taken further back from the above card. First is the Young & Co original and below it is the later WHA reprint. Young took a few postcards of this area that feature this man. He bears a striking similarity to Mr Young himself. I think this may be a little bit of vanity by Mr Young, appearing in his own postcards. Sadly the pond no longer exists. On the right is the Fox and Goat pub (with the Cobham Brewery sign), now a travel agent. Click to enlarge.

Hampton Hill, Middesex, Fire Brigade Procession, 12 June 1910 - Sepia Saturday
Hampton Hill, Middesex, Fire Brigade Procession, 12 June 1910. In the centre of the picture is the Jenny Lind pub, sadly closed down recently. Postcard by Young & Co of Teddington. Young published many postcards of public events like this, anywhere where there was a crowd. Festivals, fetes, marches, funerals, fairs, public proclamations, his photographers were there. Next day the participants could buy a postcard of the event hoping to see a picture of themselves in the crowd.

Hounslow Heath, Middlesex Showing the Hussar Pub c1913
Hounslow Heath, Middlesex Showing the Hussar Pub in Staines Road c1913. This is the pub shown in yesterday's post. There is still a pub called the Hussar here but it is very different. It was probably named after the 7th Queen's Own Hussars who were stationed at the nearby Hounslow Barracks. On the left is The Perseverance tea and coffee stall run by a man with the wonderful name of Henry Blizzard Henderson. This postcard was published by the newsagent George Burton of 345 Staines Road Hounslow, but the photograph was probably by Young & Co (the writing style of the caption is identical to Young's later postcards). Burton mainly published postcards of Hounslow Barracks. Click to enlarge.

New Malden, Surrey, Coombe Road and Royal Oak c1908
New Malden, Surrey, Coombe Road and Royal Oak c1908. Postcard by Young & Co of Teddington. Young would have been very familiar with this area, his wife Annie was living in nearby Lime Grove before they married in 1902 at the local Wesleyan Methodist church. The Royal Oak pub looks surprisingly similar, but the in the surrounding area only the distant trees show any trace of the semi-rural idyll suggested by the postcard.
